Dorothy Johnson (Burnett)

Dorothy Mae Burnett, age 74 of Joplin, Mo., passed away early Sunday, June 14, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was born on December 14, 1945 in Independence, Mo., the daughter of Arthur and Gudrun (Sandvick) Johnson. A long-time area resident, Dorothy worked in Human Resources at Freeman Hospital for 15 years, followed by 15 years in a doctor’s office at St. John’s/Mercy Hospital before retiring in 2011.

Dorothy’s friends and coworkers called her Dee. Dee was an avid flower gardener and bird watcher. She was a devoted member and ordained priest of Community of Christ Church, a church she whole heartedly loved.

She married Bob Burnett on February 26, 1966, he survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Whitney Outain of Joplin; a son, Scott Burnett of Denver, Co.; two brothers, Gordon Johnson and wife Donna of Pleasant Hill, Mo., Ronald Johnson and wife Martha of Tolland, Ct.; and two granddaughters, Abbey Outain and Annie Outain.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, Glen Johnson.

Graveside services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2020 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Mo. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation prior to the service starting at 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Community of Christ Church and may be entrusted to the mortuary.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

Dorothy & I grew up together on South Savage Street. We both participated in Skylarks & Orioles & attended Eden Heights church. She was a lovely person who grew more beautiful as the years went by. I will remember her with happy memories.
