Bio Paul Kenneth Shumaker passed away on July 5, 2009, in Kansas City, Mo., at the KC Hospice House. Paul was born on Sept. 11, 1945, and is survived by his children, Eric of Lawrence, Kan., and Megan of Prairie Village, Kan.; parents, Willis and Josephine Shumaker of Independence, Mo.; sister, Marilyn Lowery also of Independence; sister, Karen Wheeler of Union Star, Mo.; brother, Wayne Shumaker of Hopkinton, Mass.; friend and former wife, Dianne Shumaker; as well as two grandchildren, many cousins, nephews and nieces. Paul grew up in Independence and graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1963. He attended the University of Missouri, Columbia where he got his bachelor's and masters degrees in electrical engineering. After college he did an internship at NASA in Houston, and spent time in Morocco teaching TV/radio repair to orphans as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. When he returned to the United States he began a long and very successful career as an electrical engineer working at various firms including Bell Labs, Custom Electronics, King Radio, and was a founder at both Birdview Satellite and Microwave Systems Design. His crowning career achievement began when he joined forces with friends and former co-workers to form Garmin, Ltd. of Olathe, Kan. Paul continued to work at Garmin until his retirement in 2004. Even before his retirement, Paul dedicated himself to helping others as a committed philanthropist with a focus on peace-building missions around the world and other humanitarian efforts. He was an active and committed member of St. Andrew Christian Church, Olathe, Kan., where he served on numerous boards. He enjoyed spending time with family on his farm, traveling, orienteering, classical music, and many other hobbies. He will be deeply missed. Services for Paul K. Shumaker will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Saint Andrew Christian Church, 13890 W. 127th Street, Olathe, KS 66062, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Kansas City Hospice www.kansascityhospice.org/Donate- DonateEngine/Index.htm.
